Product text fields

I am new to Zen cart and have a client that is looking to use it for their online store. I have it fairly squared away so far but am running into an issue and needing some guidance. Is there a way when a product is added to the cart to make the customer input the make and model of the machine they are buying that product for? Basically the client sells tables and other accessories to go with sewing machines and they need to know the make and model of the sewing machine the person is buying for. I know we can use the comments sections when the person goes to check out but this is not ideal by any stretch of the imagination. Thanks for any help.
