How to add artist and bio field to categories and admin menu?

I need to relate the recording artists to top-level product categories. The database side of this should be simple, however I need to add a field to the gui interface for top-level categories, which will allow the administrator to select an artist for the category. I will also need to add a textarea field to the artists section of the gui to enter a short bio. My main problem is finding where in the code to add these fields. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have been searching the forum for some answers to this and have as yet found nothing..
Have you had any success or have you given up and started looking elsewhere?

One answer I am thinking of is just adding the artist themselves as a category and have sub categories under that..
This way you can have the artist bio as the category description..

Let me know if anyone has any other ideas

Many, including me, use the Manufacturers option for Artist/Author. You can rename things, and selecting the artist from the Manufacturers sidebox will display all the works (products) of that artist.
