Virtual Server V Dedicated Server

Hi,

I want to set-up a shop and am stuck at what road to go down with regards to hardware.

I am better of with a dedicated server or a virtual server ?

The costs for dedicated are higher than a virtual server and the updates and patches have to be installed at additonal cost on a dedicated.

I'm not sure about performance as well, virtualservers sound as good as dedicated but can anyone tell me from there experiences ?

I'm in the UK

Like Kim Said why do you think you need dedicated server?

You are better off searching for an answer on Google or special hosting forums.

Either way you go, always go with maintained server so you don't have to worry about patching and updating.

You do need to be very careful with VPS, as to what is being provided/offered. The price may start out at between £30 to £40 pm, but then you have to add:

1. £10 to £15 per month for a control panel.
2. If available then "Management" may cost another £50 to £100 pm extra, plus another £50 pm for "Firewall Management".
3. Then another £50 to £100 pm for a Backup service.

This now works out more expensive than a Fully Managed Dedicated Server.

Unless you expect to have an extremely successful and busy website from the beginning then normal Shared Hosting should do - at least to begin with.

Kim: I just assumed that dedicated was best way to for server uptime and avoiding having a slow site. I don't think my site will be the next big thing for sure but just never had a clue.

The first thing to do is to avoid hosting with a Bucket Hosting company, who pack their servers to the gills with sites - thus slowing the server down to breaking point.
