Default Different Category & Sub-Category Image Sizes & Listings Per Row

    Hi,

I would like to know how I can setup my store to display different Categories & Sub-categories.

Currently there only appears the option to have the settings exactly the same.

I would like to be able to have 3 Categories per row with images set @ 140px on my store home page. This is the current setup I have.

I would then like to be able to have 4 Sub-categories per row @ 95px on the Subcategories page. This is what I cannot change.

There is only the 1 option for these settings which therefore applies it to both.

    Thanks in advance

    Amanda

That would require quite a bit of custom coding. Your best bet would be to add the images and their titles in three column display to your define_main_page.php, and make your subcat display settings in admin.

It might work to do a view source of your homepage as it is, copy the HTML for the category display, and paste that into define_main_page.php. Then you can turn off categories on the homepage and reset them for subcats.

I figure I might be able to get around the smaller sub-cat image sizes by making them the exact size that I need them.

Is there an easy way to change just the list per row to have a different main page amount?

Not really. It's not like you can change a number in one place; the settings are referenced multiple times in the code.

OK, so maybe the only way around it is to set my sub categories to exactly how I want them (95px - 4 per row), turn off show categories on the main page and set my category images up as clickable links in the define main page section.

If I was to go this way, would there be any downfalls ie, search engines?

If you use the "copy & paste" method I described, you would have precisely the same page output/display as before, so there could be no repercussions from search engines.

This display would be static, not dynamic, so that if your categories changed, you would have to manually update or repeat the process.

Thanks for that. Have followed your suggestions and I am happy with the outcome :)

I'd like to add subcategory images to my top category pages.

Currenly they are set to display but are hidden using the display:none method. The problem is if I remove this the images display tiny beacause they are banner shaped to fit the top of the main category pages.

Is there a way to use either a different image or custom thumbnail for the subcategory list so I can display standard square images here?

You could go the other way and use standard square images for the categories (which would appear in the listings), and hide them on the actual category page using CSS and add the banner image to the category description.
