    Default Multiple Images Names

i have started displaying multiple images on some of my products and i see that all of the following images would show up for one product just because the names start with the same 4 letters...

    fredabc_LRG.jpg
    fred_73b2_LRG.jpg
    fred_01_LRG.jpg
    fred_02_LRG.jpg
    freddy_LRG.jpg
    fredrick_LRG.jpg

    my question is ..why?

they are very obviously different names. this is going to cause me alot of grief now as many of my products have similar beginnings to their names.

This is only if the base image's name is fred.jpg.
If you name your base images such that none will be completely included in the beginning of another base image name, they will not get confused.
fredabc.jpg, fred_73b2.jpg, freddy.jpg and fredrick.jpg as base names will never get confused with each other.

fred_73b2.jpg and fred_73b2a.jpg as base names would have identity problems.

yes, that is the problem. and my question, why? they are 2 different names, why doesn't zencart see that?

yeah, i saw that post already, i haven't read it word for word though. my question is, why can't zen cart tell the difference between photo.jpg and photo1.jpg?

if you go to a website and they have a photo page that displays photos with the names:
    photo1.jpg
    photo2.jpg
    photo3.jpg etc.
the site doesn't get confused and display photo3 where photo2 should be or add photo2&3 to photo1 page. they are two different names, i don't understand why zencart can't tell the difference.

it's not a big deal, i can change my image names, i was just wondering why ZC can't tell the difference.

It can tell the difference. Because of the system for automatically detecting and using additional images, a name that starts with exactly another name will be treated as an additional image for the other name.
fred_73b2a.jpg starts with fred_73b2, so it will be read as an additional image for fred_73b2.jpg. It can't read your mind and know that you intended fred_73b2a.jpg to belong to another product and not this one. To avoid the conflict, you would have to change the system to explicitly call out every additional image for a product and not auto-detect them.
