Can I do a fresh install because I just dont get it

I have read and re read the upgrading 3 easy steps and I just dont understand!

I am not a site wizard at all and the reason for having Zen Cart is due to how simple it has been to run and install until I come to upgrading!

Is it possible to do a fresh install and then import the customers, orders and products over from the original database into the new one and then tweak he rest of the site from there?

If so what is the best way to go about doing it to ensure that all of the customers, products and orders are fully in tact?

I keep getting a message that the database needs a higher patch. I did a clean install, then imported data only from the old database into the new database (per instruction on Zen) then I ran the Database update but got an error about Latin language?? and still get the error message. The server info states:
Zen Cart 1.3.9h

Database Patch Level: 1.3.8

v1.3.8 [2008-01-27 14:24:40] (Fresh Installation)
v1.3.8 [2008-01-27 14:24:40] (Fresh Installation)

Anyone got any great ideas on how to solve this issue?

Rather than hijacking another thread, try typing the error message into the search part of this forum. You'd be amazed what's already been discussed.
