Default Hosting issue (excessive no. of files)

Hi everyone, wondering if someone could help me out.

I've got an "unlimited" hosting account (before anyone says anything, yes I know nothing is unlimited, basically what I get is 10GB and more bandwidth than I've ever used plus as many emails / domains as I'd like). When I signed up many years ago I was not aware / they did not have a publicised limit on the no. of files anyone was allowed to host. So I've been hosting 4 zencart sites on this account without any issues until a few days ago I received a warning email that I have exceeded my allowance of 10,000 files (in fact they told me I had 1.8 million files)

I noticed my sites were taking up a huge amount of space for no apparent reason and deleted the cache for SSU and Imagehandler. This has helped a little, the disk space I'm using has been reduced to less than half of what it was and now after this big clean up I still have about 370,000 files.

I will accept that 10,000 files is a very low limit and a single zencart site can easily exceed this; for example I've got a few thousand product images already.

BUT: 370,000 files, for 4 sites still seems excessive; that's over 90,000 per site. I've set up cron jobs to delete the SSU cache (I think, don't know if this is working with the php file that comes with this addon ?!)
and imagehandler cache and still I'm at this number.

Can anybody help, where are all these files coming from?

    I'm running Zen Cart 1.3.8a
    ImageHandler 2
Don't know which version of Simple SEO URLs (how do I see this?)
And a bunch more add ons which I don't even remember. Basically I set up the sites when I had a lot more time, now I'm stuck having to sort this out preferably without having to wipe everything and start again because I simply do not have the time anymore.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

where are all these files coming from?
Where are all those files located? Which folder has the most files in it?

I think I resolved part of the issue, the cron files that come with ssu didn't do anything at all! So now I set it up with a command I found on some website and it deletes the cache just fine at regular intervals. Now I am at a much more sensible 10k-20k files per site (or so my hosting tech support tells me). I suspect most of these are product images.

The problem is I cannot see how many files are in each folder. How do I do this? The cpanel filemanager does not show file counts for folders and subdirectories, and neither does my ftp software.

I also cannot see how many images exactly I have because the ftp software gets truncated at 7995 files and the filemanager just crashes the browser.

If I am to get this no. of files down, I need to know which are not being used currently because I don't want to break any live sites.

I recently started updating one of my sites as in deleting all products and images and starting fresh. My supplier just offered 1 image zipfile that contains like 15k images. But I've not necessarily added every single one of their products - is the only way to check which images are not related to any products by doing it manually?

So far I've cleaned up by deleting the cache, bmz_cache, paypal payment logs and sample images. Is there anything else obvious that I can get rid of like logs of some kind?

    Thanks!

be careful just deleting the contents of the "cache" folder, as this contains error logs generated from your store.. (not to be confused with the bmz_cache, which contains cached image files from ImageHandler)

some errors which appear/occur on a common page could generate an error log every couple of seconds.. if this folder contains any error logs, you should investigate them to resolve the problem.

deleting the files will lower your file count, but they will generate back as the error keeps occurring.

that's been my most common reason for finding large amounts of files in zc. if the cache folder isn't monitored, it can create TONS of files..
