The changes can all be done in the stylesheet.css that's in the includes/templates/abby_template/css directory.

You might want to get a copy of firefox with web developers toolkit or firebug. Either one can help you find the things you want to change and let you try different things while actually looking at your site.

Try finding in the templates stylesheet.css

.sideBoxContent {
	background-color: #ffffff;
	padding: 0.4em;
	}

Change to

.sideBoxContent {
	background-color: transparent;
	padding: 0.4em;
	}
