Customer login above header?

I want to give the customers the option to login by putting one single line above the header that has the two simple login boxes:
Email Address: ##########__ Password:##########___ .

Trying to make it easy, and not have the customers go thru an extra couple pages just to log-in. I've tried all kinds of ways to take the form from the customer login page, and put it into the header. But nothing seems to work. Has anyone done this, or even better- can someone give me an idea of how to do this? I am stalled out...
