How can I add a cart overview?

Hi all

I am currently working on a web template and what I'd like to achieve is a customised version of the cart overview at the top of each page which simply shows how many items have been bought and what its total amount would be. For example £0.00 0 items

My question is: Is this possible? Is there an add-on that makes this easy or is there simply a snippet of code that I can use?

Any help will be gratefully received.
