New Products on Main Page php?

Hi,

I'm trying to get new products to show on my main page, but since its a modified template, setting configuration/index listing/show new products on main page to "1" does not do anything. can anyone tell me the php code required for this and in what file I should put it in (tpl_main_page.php?)
