Default Add warning message to header??

I once was browsing my site during a maintenance period, or other time when the site was static and inactive, and noticed a red bar across the top with a warning message.

I was wondering if there is a way to customize "warning message" to let my customers know of particular nuances in our hours, on short notice. Like if we were to close or change hours on a particular day, the week prior to that day I could make sure a warning message was posted at the top of the header, because people actual do find the web site and then stop by our retail store based on the fact we are available during the day.

I want to make sure we don't lose folks who stop by after looking at the web site only to realize we're closed -- a bright colored customized warning message which could be enabled and disabled from Admin would be sweet!

Anyway, if anyone is out there in the same boat, let me know if you have any sharable secrets.

These alert messages (and there are a number of them) are usually triggered by an action that requires them to be displayed.

What you are suggesting can be done, but it's quite detailed, because it's likely to require several php files, and a change to your database.

You will probably have to pay for it to be developed.

Or you could adapt the built-in "advance notice of maintenance" to suit your needs by:
    a) admin->configuration->website maintenance->NOTICE PUBLIC Before going Down for Maintenance: ON/OFF -- set to true
    b) admin->configuration->website maintenance->Date and hours for notice before maintenance - put any date/time text there
    c) customize the language text for TEXT_BEFORE_DOWN_FOR_MAINTENANCE in your own custom english.php file. Note that the %s in that text will display whatever you enter in step b) above.

Bingo, DrByte. I don't really use the "down for maintenance" aspect of the site, so it certainly is adaptable on the fly to a "shop will be closed on [date]" message. I appreciate your concise instructions.
