Category pages listed as "Home" and no breadcrumbs

I'm having some strange behaviors and don't know if they are related.
First, some-but not all- of my category pages show "home" instead of the actual category. The breadcrumbs show "Home" as the location too. I've been tooling through the database to see if there is anything to add to the confusion but haven't found anything yet.

Next, some of the product pages don't have the previous-up-next buttons.

I haven't done any modifications to the site or database lately so I'm not sure what could have triggered this.

What are you set for

admin > config > Layout Settings > Define Breadcrumb Status >

Bread crumbs are set at 2. Off for home page only.

Try switching to the classic template to see if it is your template that is the cause

As a standard install does not exhibit this you must have a non standard/edited core file not allowing this to render

yea. I was thinking I need to do an upgrade. That will be my opportunity to pick through the files and see if any are corrupted.

Well, just to confuse matters the problem has gone away before I had a chance to figure out what was causing it.
