Need help with attributes please

I have a brand new store just set up. Most recent version of Zen. The person that set everything up for me just had a baby, and everything is working except I'm getting red lights instead of green lights when I link my attributes for my downloads. She said before she had her baby that she thought it was all set up like her store so it should all work, but I need to get stuff loaded in my store for our grand opening and she is in the hospital and I've read through what I can and it is all over my head. I've used zen stores and know how to link it all up from another store I sell at, so I think I must have my folder in the wrong part of my FTP or I have the path wrong or something minor, but I can't figure out what it is.

On my FTP (HostMonster) I have a /downloads folder in the main directory and I have my designer folder inside that one. When I try to link my attributes, I'm typing my designerfolernumber/linkname.zip exactly the way it is on the FTP but the light is red. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong or if I need to move that designer folder out of the downloads folder? Any help for dummies would be greatly appreciated.

The Download directory should be called:
/download

without the S on the end ...

That's the way I had it first, and it wasn't working then, so I read something that said downloads, so I changed it, but it isn't working either way.

Should that download folder be in the main directory or in another one of the folders?

It should be on the same level as the:
/includes
/pub
/download

I see a /includes in two different folders, in the /admin folder (that we renamed so it isn't called admin anymore) and in the /store folder. I don't see a /pub folder anywhere. Sorry I'm such a pain.

I changed the configure files for her and changed them to direct the downloads to the root directory, above the public_html file... if that makes sense. I had trouble getting mine to work when I did it as well. I ended up having to do it differently. So I did it the way it directed in the tutorial and then just did it the same way as mine.

This is how I have hers set up:

define('DIR_FS_DOWNLOAD', '/home/username/');

So now when they add an attribute to a product they specify the folder name then the file name in the attribute field like this:

download/file_name.zip

Will this not work for her? This is how I set it up on mine and it works fine. She also is planning on adding separate manufacturers later with their own admin profiles and their own download files.
