Default Intermittent Performance Issue -- Really Need Help

    Hello All,

    Running Zen Cart 1.9d

I am having an issue with my site, where most of the time it will load quite quickly, but then out of no where it will hang. After waiting 20-30 seconds the page will load. It happens randomly, but if i go on the site and keep hitting random links, eventually it will not load. Parse times seem to be normal (once in a while it will be above 5 seconds) but for the most part less than 2 second.

I have asked my host about this issue, but they say everything seems normal. Its quite annoying since i know customers will not stand to wait that long for a page to load. I have optimized the images so do not believe its that, especially since it loads fast most of the time.

    I have:
    Image Hander 2
    Tabbed Products Pro (currently disabled)
    Fast and Easy Checkout
    CEO uri rewriter
    Xmulti Sell Addon
    CSS/JS Loader
    JQ Lighbox

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated...

    1) A link to your site would help otherwise we will be lobbing guesses at you
    2) Are the slow loads effecting particular categories, are they more noticeable at certain times?
    3) Who is your host
    4) Have you checked your /cache folder for error files
    5) Product Pages that have lots of attributes set on them, will be slower than normal product pages
    6) Have you seen this page https://www.zen-cart.com/tutorials/index.php?article=21

As far as everything that you mentioned, it happens randomly. I'm on a shared host with host gator...I asked them if I should move to a vps but they said no need to..:if you click on random links, it will eventually hang

No errors in cpanel log and cache folder

About 200 products have attrIbutes...like 1100 products total

I spoke to my host and they advised they can enable cache for my site, optimize the database, and also suggested I use a CDN to help load content. Any thought about this? Also, what do they mean by optimizing my database, what will they do to it?

You should be asking *them* why exactly they think each of those things is necessary. Using a CDN isn't going to stop an intermittent hang ... it's only an expensive bandage.
And if *they* are offering to optimize your database, then *they* should be answering your question about what they're going to do.

I did ask them, just waiting on a reply back from them.Do you think this may be server or script issue?

Very hard to tell without running detailed line-by-line code diagnostics to see what exactly is happening when the "freeze" happens, to narrow down whether the issue is with the CPU or the database or whatever.

Have you tried putting the site onto another server? Even your own PC? Do the hangups happen when run from a different server? If not, maybe that'll help your hosting company narrow things down.

I have put it on another host and do have have these issues, which leads me to believe it is my host. By optimizing, they went into phpmyadmin and hit repair, which makes the site faster (i guess) but i still have the hangups.

The only thing i do not have on the host i am testing with is the ceon uri rewriter, which is in there, but not enabled. I did disable it from host gator site, but still have the same issues.

Is there any particular pattern to when the hang happens? A certain particular product being displayed (perhaps in a sidebox, or anywhere else)? A certain "sale" or "special" applied to products being shown? If you navigate through each one of your products (yes, I know you have a lot), does "one" particular product consistently cause the problem? If not, then the issue is more likely the host than the database.
