Display price showing $0 in red when applying special / salemaker

After searching quite a bit, I can't quite find an answer, so any help is greatly appreciated.

I have my products with a price of $0, priced by attributes, and the attributes are the actual product price. I also have "please select a size" with a price of $0 as the default attribute. So, there is no display price. (I didn't want the lowest price to show as I feel it's a bit misleading. We sell bedding and most people buy Queen size, yet the Twin size/price would be what shows.)
Now, when I go to Product Price Manager and add a Special Price Info of 20%, the display price now shows $0.00 in red and the prices disappear from my attributes drop down menu. Can I still have the attributes prices show? Also, can I change the $0 showing in red as the display? Maybe just have it say $20% off? I saw a thread saying you can change the display, but I didn't quite understand it. The attributes price showing is very important though. Also, if the attributes prices do show, can they show the original price and the sale price? or show in red? anything to show that the sale is applied?

I would really like to be able to do this through this channel, but if I use Salemaker instead, the prices show in the dropdown, but I still have the display price showing as: Sale: $0.00

I have this version of zencart: v1.3.9h
I'm pretty new at all this, trying to figure it all out. someone else built the site for us and gave us some basic instructions on setting up items, etc, but now i'm on my own. Thanks in advance for any help and sorry this is so long!!

Did you try marking that Attribute for the:
please select a size
Display Only YES
Default YES

and then its price is not used for Price display ...

Thans for your reply. I did try that, but I do not want a display price at all. Since I have Pillows sold in different sizes w/ different prices, I don't want one particular price shown. Is there a way to have the Red part just not show the Price at all? Maybe just say 20% off? If so, when I'm not having a sale, would it show 0% off, b/c that wouldn't be good either. Thank you!
