Accessing DB/Functions Outside the Store?

Our company has a main site and the a sub-site which has zen cart. There is a -lot- of duplication of effort (marketing imgs that are used in the shopping cart) and this also leads to inconsistencies.

I was wondering if there was a preferred way to access the zencart db (for image galleries and product descriptions) -outside- of zencart.

I guess I can query the db directly, but I was hoping that, like WordPress and phpbb there was a (fairly) simply way to connect to the db and retrieve product info.

Ideas?
