Help white screen death

I hope someone can help me I have trawled through google and this forum for hours.

I installed the zencart site some mnths ago for a friend and it was all fine. I haven't been into any of the files and she says she hasn't either and the website is just blank now and I have no idea how long it has been like that. There is nothing in the the cpanel errorlog.

I immediately downloaded a full backup and then uploaded a new install and tried to upload the database backup and the message I get is "#1064 - You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near './' at line 1"

Can anyone point me in the right direction please and bear in mind I am inexperienced so simple jargon-free would be helpful

What version of Zen Cart are you using? If not the latest, why?

Oh man what a pain. I couldn't sort it out so did the site from scratch.
NOW I have a different problem. My host moved to a different server at the weekend and since then my own zen cart site has been down - BLANK SCREEN AGAIN! I can't even access the error log - this is the message [a fatal error or timeout occurred while processing this directive]

I have told my host providers who are looking at it but in them meantime my site has been down all week

AND I'VE JUST DISCOVERED THE ADMIN PAGE HAS A LIST OF ERRORS LIKE THIS:
Deprecated: Function ereg() is deprecated in /home/relaxing/public_html/includes/classes/db/mysql/query_factory.php on line 177

Who is your hosting company?

Bear in mind that a LOT of hosts are incapable of running sophisticated eCommerce, as they don't understand it, and secondly, they tend to configure their servers to handle only very basic websites - so will disable (or improperly configure) many of the PHP.INI settings.

My bet is that if you find a new host (one that knows eComm) then your problems will magically disappear.

trekkie, I first would backup all and sundry (file system and DB) and then install the lot on my local development server (XAMPP, WAMP, LAMP etc).

Only after establishing that the site works fine locally I would attempt to get it up and running on a new host - a host that fully understands eCommerce.

That means you're using a very OLD version of Zen Cart on a NEW version of PHP for which it wasn't designed.

You need to upgrade to the latest version of Zen Cart.

So I am getting a blank screen for example when someone creates and account yet odd enough they do get the account creation email?

Thank you for the information on the myDebug in the Cache folder of the website. Correcting the error immediately restored my access to my website on my test WAMP server.

I noted that in an explanatory page it is stated that the "fatal" errors are the most important. However, on my WAMP server, the error I was getting seemed innocuous, and furthermore it was related to a test file that I had renamed, so the file was supposedly inactive. The error was this:

I went into that file and deleted the ) on line 28, and my website was once again visible on my WAMP server.
