annoying categories sidebox display issues

He folks please help with this. I've been frustrated and tried so many things to no avail

I have two issues.

unusually larger space between Computers and Electronics both category names (please refer to first attachment )


for the life of me I cant get the background color to fit the width of the sidebox (please refer to attachment )

Thanks for the reply stevesh. Actually it's not a background image it's just a color and I can't get it to expand to the whole sidebox.

any ideas with my other problem. the unusually large space between category computers and electronics?
