Default Working around dimensional weight for USPS?

We sell many items that weight around 5 lbs. packed but are bumped into the dimensional weight category because of size. Since USPS live doesn't seem to take into account the dimensional weight we are trying to figure a workaround.

I figured that we would just enter the weight of the products that fall into dimensional weight due to size as 20 lbs. We also were considering using the multiple zone module so that we could have different options in different zones.

But then we realized we would have the following problems:

--When shipping internationally there doesn't appear to be dimensional weight and the international customer would charged 20 lbs. vs. 5 lbs. - a huge difference.

--If someone were to purchase two of the same sized items that could potentially be shipped in the same box they would be paying twice. Tare weight wouldn't help here because it would be so different for many of the products.

--We would like to have UPS rates displayed as well because UPS is sometimes less expensive than USPS for large or heavier items. UPS dimensional weight is different than USPS.

Has anyone figured out a workaround to this problem? I would really appreciate any help/advice anyone can give me on this as I have been stuck for two weeks on this and can't move forward.

This add-on claims to handle dimensional weight. I haven't used it.

I have been looking for a work around myself and I started another post. balihr suggested I try a plug in he came up with.

I would be happy with usps not showing up at all, at check out, for a curtain weights, but I'm not sure how the Min and Max in the usps shipping module would effect other products at smaller weights.

One thing I tried that did not work was putting the weight 7.1 lbs for the items that are over 22 inches. When going to Alaska it worked great. Last night I had the same product sell going to Washington state. I'm in North Carolina. It charged $48.12 and UPS was $45.XX in the cart, but my stamps.com acct shipped it for $18.90. I refunded the overage and wondered how many folks checked the price and did not buy.

I have gone into the usps settings admin the cart and set the max weight for the services I provide in usps to 1.5 lbs. Then I went and changed all the weights for these Plus 22 inch items to where the weight is over 1.51 lbs and thus my customers can not get the usps for items that are over 1.51 lbs. I strongly feel that usps wants to get out of the larger package business and so the trend is our friend.

I'm looking for the same solution, we need to ship large carbon fiber seats for race cars, but through Fedex (https://www.trackreadyproducts.com/i...roducts_id=556) and whereas they're not heavy - approx 30 lbs - they're big.

The calc is easy: multiply the length x width x height in inches and divide by 139. I'm looking for a plugin where ideally you could flag certain categories, e.g. seats, for dim weight and magically the Fedex plugin will see it.
