    Default Root Versus a Folder?

is there any reason why it would matter, SEO wise or anything else, if my store is in the root versus a folder?

Don't know about SEO, but I think it makes sense to have your store in the root. One less click for your visitors to see the stuff you want them to buy.

My site auto redirects, so customers don't have to do an additional click, but ultimately, does it matter if its in a folder versus root?

If your site has nothing else in the root, then YES you should move your store into the root ... for multiple reasons:
    a) you are having a unique problem (FB etc) that's creating a demand for it, for you specifically
    b) there are many SEO benefits to having your site properly structured
    c) redirects are from root to a folder are huge negatives in SEO

You've now spent a week trying to not do what you've already guess you should be doing. Why not just do it?
