Default Off site Gift Cards - is it possible and how?

I would like to be able to give someone a gift card/certificate - not online - that I made myself with a code that could then be used after they create an account.

    Can this be done?

Any ideas on how this can be done?

I thought about using a coupon code for like $10 off but that would apply to anyone that found the code. I want to be able to restrict it to just the people I choose.

Maybe the answer is in the difference between

Uses per Coupon - The maximum number of times the coupon can be used, leave blank if you want no limit.

    and

Uses per Customer - Number of times a user can use the coupon, leave blank for no limit.

    What is the difference?

The Uses per Coupon limits the total number of times a Discount Coupon can be used ...

The Uses per Customer limits the total number of times a customer can use the Discount Coupon ...

If the Uses per Coupon is set to 10, then it can be used a total of 10 times ...

If the Uses per Customer is set to 1, then a customer may only use it 1 time, providing the Discount Coupon has not already been used the Uses per Coupon number of times ...

If the Uses per Customer is set to 2, then a customer may only use it twice, providing the Discount Coupon has not already been used the Uses per Coupon number of times ...

Thanks, I did test the idea putting 1 in both spots and it worked. The first test customer used it and the second was not able to. This did clarify things I was previously confused about and sorry I didn't think to test it first - too many ideas running through my head.
