When I add the code to the tpl.header.php the new pulldown menu does display but all the rest of the screen goes blank.
This is almost always caused by a PHP syntax error. When you added the code you fubared something, maybe a tag got deleted, a comma out of place, a hash mark doubled up, extra carriage return, etc.
