Order Detail Lost After Upgrade

I recently upgraded my site from1.3.7 to 1.3.9 and since then the detail* is lost of any order that has been placed using Paypal.

* ie all detail of the order in the shopping basked is lost and no email is generated confirming that the order has been placed. We only know about a possible order by referring to our Paypal account.

Orders placed not using Paypal continue work perfectly and Paypal orders worked perfectly well in 1.3.7. The problem only started after the upgrade.

Can anyone tell how I might solve this problem - or even where I can start looking to try and solve it myself.

Paypal IPN or Paypal Express ? If IPN, try Express - it's much more stable.
