Front Page Only: SLOOOW Parse Times

The front page of my website has been taking forever to load:

Parse Time: 8.892 - Number of Queries: 4131 - Query Time: 8.1545999289856

Other pages on the site are MUCH better than this. I went throughout the Optimization FAQ steps to try to reduce this and don't see what else to do. I don't have related products or specials displayed on the front page.

Any ideas what might be causing this? There is an almost 0.0 "Top" load on the VPS server, so I do not think that is the problem. The delay is in the initial GET, not in the subsequent image loading etc.

It seems the main problem is with the display of sub-categories on the main page. I was getting thrown off by a delay between when I change the settings in the admin and when they take effect on the front end. I have 8 top level categories under my root category (that the home page opens to). If I set the settings below to show those, it generates a huge parse time with 4K queries. How can I limit the front page to just show those top 8 subcategories without also querying the entire DB?

If I change the settings to :

Categories - Always Show on Main Page 0
Categories - Always Open to Show SubCategories 1

Then I get great load times on the front page (only 42 queries vs 4,000). But I'd really like to keep the categories display on the main page. Is there someway that I can do that without hosing my load time?
