Newsletter Subscribe sending to unconfirmed accounts

Howdy folks, pretty new to Zen Cart and figuring things out as I go. Working on setting up Newsletter Subscribe at the moment and it's doing some puzzling things.

I believe I have all the files in the right place, most things are behaving as expected. I have my form on the front page for users to enter their email address. When they do, they get the email with the link to confirm their subscription. When they confirm, they get the welcome message.

Two problems.

One, even if they do not confirm their address, if I send a newsletter, they will receive it. Unconfirmed accounts are getting email, even if they aren't supposed to.

Two, the bottom of the emails do not have an unsubscribe link. They have the site owner email address, but no automated method to remove their subscription.

What might I have overlooked? How can I get these features working right?

This is using the Newsletter Subscribe module:

Are there some other options out there? What I'm wanting to do is enable users to sign up for the newsletter with just an email address rather than requiring them to create an account. They can still sign up for the newsletter when creating an account, but this method would allow signing up just by entering their email address and nothing more.

The description for Newsletter Subscribe indicates that it would handle perfectly what I'm wanting, but I'm having the glitches described above.
