NO Order Confirmation Email Sent

I wouldnt worry too much, it can happen occasionally.

To be safe what you can do is install the 'Recover cart sales' module.

This allows you to look in the cart of any customer which hasnt completed the check out process completely. So for ones that you receive payment for but no order, you can go into and look what was in their basket before the error occured, and see what they were purchasing.

This is the first time it's happened to me and it freaked me out. I read your post and installed this module. It was the first time I've ever installed a module which required me to touch my database, but I figured if I didn't know what was selling,what good was the store anyway. I had nothing to lose (of course I did a backup first). It worked like a charm. My thanks to everyone involved.

I guess my question is why does this happen and is there anything that can be done to prevent or workaround it?

I encountered the same problem and installed the RCS module which found the "lost" item. I email the customer and informed him the order had been received and is being processed.

I did notice, however, that the item was still listed as being available so I had to manually delete it from the category listings. Is this typical behaviour of this problem?

I'm not sure why you're happy to take the advice of someone who gives you only a bandage, and ignore the advice of someone who tells you the solution.
Using RCS is NOT a solution. It is merely a bandage. RCS doesn't complete any orders in your store.
Turning OFF the PayPal IPN module, and turning ON the EC module will prevent these IPN-related problems from happening. Isn't that what you wanted in the first place? (rhetorical question, don't answer it)

I installed and configured EC, but when I click on the PayPal button, I get this error:

This webpage is not available
Google Chrome's connection attempt to yesterdaysmagazines.comipn_main_handler.php was rejected. The website may be down, or your network may not be properly configured.

First thing I noticed was the slashes were missing from the URL.

Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like you've got some URL-Rewriting addons installed which are mucking things up under the guise of pretending to add SEO benefits.

Thanks, you reminded me that I did have a third party module SEO module installed which is probably the culprit. I'll report it to them as a critical issue on Monday.
