customer login page and checkout page issues

A few weeks ago I started getting emails from customers saying they were not able to go through checkout to pay, and now they are not able to log in and create their shopping cart either. I'm in a very vulnerable position, as the guy who set up this store site for me kept all the database information and did any work on it for me without telling me what to do or how to do it...and now he's disappeared on me. Short of just pulling the plug and starting from scratch, can anyone tell me (a computer illiterate person) how or if the problems can be fixed?

I have version v1.3.8a/1.3.8; my site is store.waterloominis.com. If you click the login link, you get a page with some product info and my banner at the top, but no login boxes. If you go into the Langton section (my primary product line) and start a shopping cart, when you go to checkout you wind up back at the non-login page.

Can anyone help me?
