Default Naming rules for downloadable files?

My client has downloadable pdfs in ZC (1.3.9a). They have developed a naming method that looks something like this: filename.somethingelse.V1.pdf

They've had periodic issues with these files -- downloads often stall or crash (often with I.E.) and lately customers have been getting periodic "Forbidden, you do not have access to this file" errors.

Would their naming system (with all its associated dots) be causing or part of the problem?

Have you tested an alternate naming approach, perhaps using underscores instead of periods?

Yes and it didn't seem to make a difference.

A related question -- does the redirect/symlink slow downloads?

I did a test -- downloading a 1.1 MB file via ZC (using redirect) and just a plain PDF download of the same file using a plain URL.

The ZC download took nearly minute to download. The straightforward method took less an a couple of seconds.

So clearly, there is some issue with the redirect/symlink method. What can be done to change this?

If download-by-redirect/symlink is slow, then your server's got a problem, because ZC has nothing to do with it once the symlink is made.
