Different strokes, I guess, but I would have cancelled the order and bought elsewhere. My CC info is legit, and I wouldn't appreciate the implication otherwise. Chargebacks are a cost of doing business.

Thats a silly way of thinking of it. Im sure if some shop rang you up after verifying details of a card and to confirm if you really ordered a product , and it happened that you hadnt and your details had been stolen, you would be singing the praises of that store for being high on security and stopping you being ripped off

Mmm, thanks for doing my thinking for me, but no.

One of the reasons I buy as much stuff online as I do is so I don't have to waste my time talking to people on the phone or in a store. Since my liabilty in case of credit card fraud is limited by law to $50 (unless I participate in the fraud), the guy who's waking me up with a phone call is covering his backside, not mine.

Fact is, I've never bought in to all the fear p o r n about identity theft, and anyone who has ever tried to get the credit card companies to take CC fraud seriously knows that they don't.

As I said, chargebacks are just another cost of doing business. You do what you can to minimize them, but without (IMO) annoying your customers.

Well, if not 'wasting your time' is so important to you 'cancelling the order and going elsewhere' seems a bit contradictory

You didnt ask what kind of product it was. I have sites which sell products in one particular field, some are cheap, some are in the thousands, and very technical, so I personally get 'wary' if someone simply goes onto my site and orders one of the expensive items, with no correspondance, or checking if its in stock, or they wan't it shipped to an alternative address.

Yea, verily. Back in the beginning I used to call card issuers and attempt to report fraud attempts. I learned very quickly that when it comes to eCommerce, (non-swiped transactions), they don't give a crap because they aren't on the hook.
