yeah using the attributes sheet I was able to do two products pretty much automatically, now I'm working with the site admin to try to get him to parse the attributes/option values straight into the sql database (to save me manually entering up to 500 options to the quantity (pieces) field)

So thanks for your help, you've got me on the right track, just need to get over the hump.
