Replace button with CSS controlled text

I've seen lots of references on replacing text with buttons but none on how to replace a button with text - controlled by CSS.

From what I've found so far it looks like I'll have to edit a number of .php files. But I wondered whether someone could give some generic advice on where to start and what to look for.

It's just one button you want to change, or all of them ? If all of them, Admin - Configuration - Layout Settings.

A side of zen cart I never knew existed. That seems to be what I need.

css edits can be done in stylesheet_css_buttons.css

and I assume the text can be changed by editing the image alt or title text.
