Custom Page Not Found Is Not Working

I know how important it is to have a custom 404 page so I am trying to get mine working. I have it set in the admin > my store to go to my page not found file. I also have edited the define pages editor for it. I have enabled my custom page on my hosting side as well. I still can't get it to come up. It just shows IE's default error 404 page..

No no no, the Zen Cart page-not-found is for Zen Cart pages, not for pages outside Zen Cart.

If you want to tell Apache to not use its own default page and use your ZC page-not-found instead, you can use the example htaccess rules found in the example file in the /extras/ folder and incorporate those rules into your own self-created htaccess file.
