Inventory count messed up! Please help

For some odd reason, my inventory control is not working - I had one item left of something showing in stock, but yet zencart allowed the customer to purchase 4 of this item, of course I only have one and will now have to refund the customer and explain to them that for some reason this zencart thing didn't do what it's supposed to do. Now the inventory count shows -3????? What the ??? is going on here

it's in "Configuration - Stock"
Then set "allow checkout" to false
