Image Scaling

yes 'Upload a New Additional Image' would clear it up and changing main image would be good since you can do everything else,

when i referenced the readme file i didnt mean that there was a problem with readme file i more meant i was able to work everything without reading it and the only thing i wasnt 100% about was the additional image, but after uploading 1 image it was clear what it done,

tomorrow i will upload my 4000 odd products and images to test site and then add your add on, should it handle product images ok for products allready on site or only products created after install, comparing two images of same size one with image handler and the 2nd with yours is that your file is so much smaller in size without much difference to image

Thanks very much for this. I don't have that many products on my test site so will be interested to hear how you get on. I can't see any problems. Except of course that the 'scaled' directory will get large. But I don't think that should be an issue but will be interested to hear.

Nigel's suggestion about categorising the scaled image folder was partly to break this large folder up into sections. Which is probably a good idea and I will get there in the next version. It will be interesting to see how it deals with 4000 images.

It should handle all images, whether or not they were there before install.

Ah! Good point about the image sizes. I have applied some compression to the jpg images. This is set at a default of 0.85 ( I had meant to make this configurable but forgot! ) That would account for some of the image size difference maybe but I am not sure it accounts for the large difference you are seeing. To be honest I am not sure how IH deals with this so if any one else does then let me know.

Compression in IH3 is admin configurable.. so any differences seen can't be taken on it's face without knowing what image compression settings in IH3 were used..

And before ONE MORE person brings it up.. When all is said and done, there will be TWO options for image management for Zen Cart v1.5. (like niccol herself has said OPTIONS are good) Just like niccol is working on making this image management add-on production ready in her spare time, the same is true of Image Handler.. So before ONE MORE PERSON implies that Image Handler for v1.5 is dead hear ye ye, hear ye: Image Handler is being re-developed for v1.5 too.. It won't happen overnight.. Goodness..

Speaking of readme files, niccol, when this becomes ready for release into the wild, I'd be happy to help you pull together the readme file.. Evenif it's EASY PEEZY to understand, yo can't assume everyone will "get it" without a little help.. Learned this over the course of my career in IT.. NEVER assume others understand it like you do..

I will have a bit of a play with your test site later on. I might send you a different version to have a play with. I am just thinking of timing some of the actions on a store with that many images which wouldn't be part of the real module but might be an interesting study for me if you can spare the time.

Oh, and thanks again. The testing of it all is a major contribution.

It is BETA. And should NOT be used on a live store.

This whole little adventured did start after a conversation between Diva and I where I did express my opinion that just perhaps Image handler was just a bit more complicated than it need be. So, I set out to explore if that belief was true.

Personally, I think that the core functionality is creating scaled version of images and serving them to the browser when required. The first version of this BETA software does that with a single file. It is not beautifully coded, it has its limitations but that did prove to me that perhaps there was merit in proceeding rather than throwing efforts behind IH4 .

There is no doubt in my mind that IH has been a 'go to' module for many years. It is a fantastically effective module and I admire it greatly. I really do hope that a version that is compatible with 1.5 appears. I just got interested in whether there were other ways of doing the same thing. Choice is always good and healthy.

My thoughts exactly I used IH3 on my old site and worked fine. I started following this after I read the conversation between you both on that thread and thought it might be worth a look, might be miss reading this but though it would be an alternative to IH3 for those who don't need all the functionality of IH3.

glad i can help, i dont know how to write code so its nice to be able to help in some way send anything you want through, ive sent my email address

also can the scaled images all be deleted, with 1 button. just wondering what happens when my suppliers send me through better images and i ftp them up, do the scaled images get redone knowing the image has changed
