Categories layout setting question

hi all,

i would like to hide the main Categories on the main index page but keeping the subCategories available in the inside pages. i could not found an option in the admin area which could fullfil this. could any one please help?

example:

main Category (AUDIO)
sub Category (HEADPHONES), (SPEAKERS)

i would like to hide all main Categories on the index page, but if somebody click on the AUDIO category on the side box, i would like to show them all sub categories like (HEADPHONES), (SPEAKERS)

i found an option to turn on / off the categories, but it would be a gobal option, once turned off, there is no categories for all pages.


any help would be appreciated.

Admin > Configuration > Layout Settings > Categories - Always Show on Main Page ->set to 0

"Main Page" here means the home page.
