I am a newzenner and apologize for asking the questions I am about to ask.
I have been reading a lot in here and found the helpful answers to be most productive in terms of my
modifications so far. I am having a hard time comprehending the shipping setup for my purposes.
Everything done so far, is working nicely, I think.
I am using the 1.5.0 version.
I have been reading the FAQ regards shipping, and now my head is spinning.
I have a variety of items that mostly have individual prices associated with each, but some items will be sold by the gram,
from a bulk supply in stock.
I have negated all add on costs for the time being, to simplify what I see at this time, so the side effect of that was to break the Australia Post shipping estimator.
It cannot give an estimate of an item with no weight or dimensions, of course. The shipping estimator will function again when I make appropriate changes.
One of the things I wanted to do was for the banknotes, I can fit many such items into a single order for the one shipping cost. I do not want this to be added to with each extra item.
The other items, having larger dimensions will of course have a different shipping cost.
If a single order had a mixed content, such as some banknotes and some other item, I would be able to send all items in the larger container for the single shipping price.
I am using the following setup at the moment.
The weights are being used as the price for the item, and weights are, of course, not displayed.
I also would like to be able to have the shipping displayed below the price, once they have indicated their location, so that the shipping estimator then has something to work with.
I feel that any extra work, on the part of the prospective customer is a negative in their eyes.
Not being able to see shipping costs until after the item is added to the cart, or until nearly at the end of checkout is a bit of a downer for me.
I have found myself backing out of such processes on other sites, or having to go through that process, just to find out the shipping costs, must annoy the seller,
as they see it as an abandonment.
How do you think I should proceed?
I would have asked these questions earlier but found that notepad was adding B.O.M.'s to edited PHP files that contained a mixture of languages.
I took a month to learn a enough about a different variety of pascal (lazarus) in order to write a text editor that detected and removed any B.O.M.
at the start of the files.
I will be back later in the day, bed time for my now, early morning, and work is not far away.
Appreciating any tips and pointers to posts already made that are here on the site for me to follow and try out.
I also am willing to write mods if I am able, to suit my purpose and post them here to help others in the boat behind me.
Just in case someone asks, in order to avoid a wait and reply scenario.
