Main Page Suddenly Slow To Load

For the past week, my main page is super slow to load. I've tried it on my pc, hubby's laptop and my ipad, all with same results. It seems to be taking approx. 15-18 seconds to load, once it's up, the rest of the pages seem to go ok.

I've optimized the database.
I turned on the gzip

I know that my hosting is not the best (GD) and that I should change it, but I can't do that right now. My other two websites that share this hosting load just fine and as normal, but this one is not.

Any ideas on why this is happening, like I said it's only been this way for about a week or so. The only major changes I made have been the upgrade to the 2012 USPS shipping. That was in February, I also added the optional shipping insurance mod and the products icon. Those were done in mid February also. Other than that, just been uploading products etc.

I don't know if that makes a difference, but just thought I would note that.

I don't know about 'suddenly', but it loads fairly quickly here, which suggests (sorry) a hosting problem. The fact that your other sites don't share the problem doesn't mean anything - they may be on different (not-yet-overloaded) servers.

It would help to optimize your product images, some of which are >100Kb. The goal is < 10Kb.

I don't know if it matters as far as the speed issue goes, but isn't javascript supposed to be in either the <head> section or the <body> section?

I'll second that, that code is in the wrong place, shouldn't effect speed

have you tried running the page through

http://tools.pingdom.com/fpt/ (view the waterfall once the test has run to see bottlenecks)

or

http://gtmetrix.com/ Gives you pagespeed (google tool) and ySlow (Yahoo tool)

Those will show you how long each bit takes to load?

Definitely look at either installing an image handling mod, or doing something about your images, as for instance

earthscauldron.com/store/images/exflabla.JPG

is being loaded for a thumbnail image. and when you have around 18 product image at about 100 - 160kb on your home page that adds up to around 2mb in size

What javascript is in the wrong place and how in the world do I fix it????????

I'll work on the images also, I mainly concentrated on making them a good size for when you enlarge the image so you could really see the product. Didn't think about the rest until you guys mentioned it!

This is the first web store I ever built, so I'm learning
