Upgrade alternative?

Hi all,

Just a question. Rather an upgrade my store from 1.39 to 1.5.

Is it possible to just do a clean install of 1.5 and then import the product and customer database into it from my old store?


I've read loads of problems from other users about hacks and other problems because of old files or something similar remaining on the server.

I'm not particularly techie so would like to avoid problems at all costs. My site could also do with a revamp! What do you guys think?

You admin that you are not particularly "techie"... so you've answered your question...

Do a proper, conventional upgrade.

Fiddling about with the database is something that can even confuse "experts".

Be aware that some add-ons you may have in 1.3.9 may not be compatible qith 1.5 . If this is the case, then there is quite a bit of work required in doing the upgrade.

For some of our clients sites, we are holding back on upgrading to 1.5, because some essential modules are not yet compatible.

I'm not sure I'd interpret the OP's question as you did, though if you interpreted it correctly, your advice is spot on.

But if he just meant to install a new blank v1.5.0 and then import, as per the upgrade instructions, his complete old database and run the Database Upgrade step on it, then that can work quite well, especially as he was thinking about perhaps redesigning his site at the same time. In fact, that's my usual upgrade path.

Just be aware, OP, that your old database can contain traces of old mods. It might be a good idea to recall what old mods were installed, check to see if any of them included sql files to mod the database, and run any uninstall sql commands those mods may have provided (they don't always.) Then you'll have a clean old database to bring into your new install.

Part of a "regular upgrade" is deleting all the old files from the server before putting the new files in place and updating the database content to suit the new version. So in that regard it cleans out bad files that might have been sitting around.
As Rob said, removing old mod stuff from the database is good too, if you have the uninstall info for those mods.

In its simplest form, an upgrade is basically a rebuild of your site anyway: you build your new set of PHP files and put those files on the server. Then run the database-update step to make your live data work with the new version. That way you keep all your customers/products/orders/etc. It's the safest and smartest way.
Of course, you do ALL of it in a test area first, and then once you've got all the hiccups cleaned out, you re-do the process on the live site ... which takes only a few minutes because you've taken good notes and have all your steps lined up ready to go.

I tried doing a up-grade and that does not work very well do to unused left over junk from I assume mods I am not using with 1.5.0 DB as discuss above.



I have straight forward Customers and Orders (no gift coupons, guest accounts, or group discounts etc.) I assume I could export all files needed and import back into 1.5.0DB. If I can do this where can I get a list of files to use?


Is there anyway using Cpanel and use the “Synchronize “ feature?

I have plenty of backups of old and new DB's

If none of the above will work then Dr Byte would you give a lot more details on how to do what you were talking about?
