Default Using the Override System to install Add ons?

I understand that the override system is a way to change the way the style and the layout of your cart. My questions is...are you able to use the same over ride system to install software add ons instead of having to merge them with existing core files and having to use win merge to transfer everything over when you upgrade or adding a new mod?

Its just really frustrating when you have to upgrade to an new version of the cart. Tried searching but...nothing was really clear about if you could or not. So hopefully someone can help.

Depends on what the mod needs to achieve.
Not all files are over-rideable and so neither can all functionality be overridden.
In its present form based on a legacy code structure, mods will usually require some changes to core code.
You just have to keep copies of the mod you installed, and make detailed comments in the changed files to ease the merging process.

ZC 2.0. should go a long way to alleviating this issue.

It rather depends on what kind of mod you are talking about. Mods that primarily deal with output, appearance, formatting, etc. will very often be totally within template override folders, even if they modify core files. Most mods with admin features will not be able to use overrides, and mods that deal with orders or customers may not be able to use overrides.
