First check that there are 1.5.0 versions for all the mods that you want to reinstall.
There are still a lot that haven't been upgraded.

Don't attempt this on a live site as you are sure to find problems.
Create a test site with v1.5.0 and begin installing the new v1.5.0 compatible mods.
Install and test each mod one by one. Document what you do as you install each mod.
I suspect this will take you some considerable time.

Then there are a number of articles in the tutorials/faqs to help you after this.

    Personally I can't contemplate installing 40 mods.
it seems like a huge amount of work.
    Are all of these essential?

What mods are they, that are essential to your website?
