One or all of the following are likely:
- a misconfigured or broken URL-rewrite addon
- incorrect image references in stylesheets
- incorrect image references in template files

I suggest you turn off your URL-rewrite stuff, since it's probably your main culprit. Most such symptoms are from those unnecessary things.
