Unless your friend has a truly miniscule bandwidth limit, there should be little effect from an added site in a subfolder that does not have any live links to it (post it obfuscated so no bots will pick it up) and is only active for hours or days.

All category/subcategory handling is based on ids, and the names will be irrelevant to the function.

I didn't think the cat/subcat names would have a bearing on the cat/subcat handling, just had to throw it our there as a possibility.

I changed the names of the subcats in the Beads category, so the names are unique all the way down to the last level. Still no change in how it functions, when I select the Jasper Beads subcategory (third level - cat > subcat 1 > subcat 2), the displayed page just has the Header and the search box which is at the top of the left column. The Catalog menu whould show second in the left column but it is not there.

Could the code for the catalog menu box be causing a conflict with the category display function. I can't imagine it would since it works just fine on other cat/subcats.

We are planning on using a vps for our new store website, I didn't want to start paying for it until we were ready to launch, but if needed to figure this issue out, then I will get it setup this weekend. That way you can see what I am talking about.

The free php hosting services are a pain, keep getting a server busy whenever I try to upload or do much with the test sites.

I have figured out what the cause of the cat/subcat menu not working right for me.

If you are on a LAMP based server, the category/subcategory menu will show and work for an unlimited number of levels. On my new Linux CentOS VPS I tried twenty levels just to be sure.

On my Windows based server using WAMP, the category/subcategory will show but not work for an unlimited number of levels, would not show at level three.

I have spent the past two days trying out different servers with the same results for the different types of servers.

I have tried three free hosting linux based servers and a linux VPS and the category/subcategory menu worked just fine.

I have tried four different windows based servers and the cat/subcat menu cuts off at a certain level. Two servers cut off at level three, one at level two, the fourth at level six.

This may not apply to all windows based servers, just the ones I tried using WAMP and not IIS with php support. The windows servers were: 2 Win7, 1 Win XP, 1 Win 2003.

Why the windows servers would cut off at different levels is a mystery to me, but at least I can go ahead and finish putting together the new online store using the linux VPS.

This may not be an issue to everyone, but a warning of a possibility of the cat/subcat menu not showing or working for all levels should be posted for those developing on a windows box with WAMP Server. I love WAMP server, by the way, and will continue to use it.

All windows boxes had a fresh download of the latest WAMP Server downloaded and installed, no copying download files from the other pc's. All four servers were setup for maximum performance for php & mysql. Each windows box (all Toshiba Laptops) had 4gb ram and quad-core processor.

This issue of the cat/subcats not showing has caused me major headaches for the past couple of weeks. I have installed the zen-cart and other similar software dozens of times and nothing I did would make a difference.
