Is there a simple way to show sub-categories by default?

I've read a bunch of threads all asking the same question but they tend to be pointed to bloated add-ons where 99% of the features aren't needed and they almost always break the design of the site.

At the moment the default method is to list all top level categories. To dig deeper you need to click on a specific one to list its sub-categories. I would like all sub-categories of all top level categories to be listed by default.

Any help would be appreciated.
