i have a massive database with over 200,000 items and i am having problems on my webcart

where everytime a search is carried out for any item, the browser reports an error http 500.
is there somewhere on mysql to change the timeout time / or elongate the searching time , or is there a better search plugin that would work with v1.5
any help appreciated please
