Default Using _LRG images and thumbnails - how to improve?

I have followed the tutorials about scaling and using multiple images for products. My product thumbnails are 125 high with variable width up to 188. The _LRG images are typically up to 900 high.

My scaled thumbnails look much better than the zencart scaled images so I am happy with that. However, on the product page below the thumbnail is a "view larger" link which just shows the thumbnail in a pop-up - not much value. At the bottom of the product listing is a crummy looking thrumbnail generated from the larger image with a "view larger" link that pops up a nice large image.

Can I eliminate the "view larger" link from under the thumbnail since it doesn't display a larger image?
How can I get zencart to use my thumbnail for the larger image at the bottom?

It seems like using multiple image resolutions has a few rough edges.

In its stock form ZC behaves just as you expect it to behave. What you describe is not normal. But we can't guess what's wrong; we'll need a link to your site to explore the matter.

Right. You're supplying the wrong images, or you're using some sort of addon that's changing normal operation of the software.

    The site is at http://www.vintagetek.org/zencart/
Look at any of the products. For the Concept and Measurement concept books the image I chose for the product is filename.jpg and the resolution is 84x125. In the same images directory I FTP'd a filename_LRG.jpg at a resolution of 600x900. I am not aware of any addons. We are using v139h.

Don't put the LRG image in the same directory. They go like this...

    ../images/filenames.jpg
    ../images/large/filenames_LRG.jpg
    ../images/medium/filenames_MED.jpg

    All will work.
