Assuming you inserted your content in the template file, you can get rid of that space on the top and bottom by removing the <p> tags here:

$content .= '<p>' . TEXT_BLANK_SIDEBOX . '</p>';
$content .= '<p>You can include text, links, images, HTML markup and even PHP code</p>';

The Blank Sidebox has its own id's, including #blanksidebox, #blanksideboxHeading and #blanksideboxContent you can use for styling.
