    Default Checkout Question

If someone is checking out and they had items in their cart from a previous session, when they start a new session and put something in their cart, the shopping cart doesn't show anything else in it, just the item they added in the current session. So they then click on the PayPal Express Checkout button which takes them to the PayPal log in page. After they log into PayPal the next PayPal page asks them to choose a payment method and then click continue. When they click continue it takes them back to my site, where a bold message tells them that an item from a previous session that was in the cart has been combined with the items from this session. Then they have to again click on the PayPal Express Checkout button, which takes them back to the PayPal log in page again where they have to log into their PayPal account for the second time.

I have tested this multiple times with a couple test accounts and this is definitely what happens in this situation. It is a real pain for a buyer. Is there some way to shut off the retaining of items in the cart after the session has expired? Or does anyone have another solution to this problem? Thanks in advance for any help that you can give me.

Simplest way would be to turn off the EC Shortcut Button, so then they're only hitting PayPal after they've selected all their shipping/payment choices.

Or, if you really want to prevent customers from ever leaving stuff in their shopping basket so they can intentionally return later to continue shopping, then you could add code to the login script to have it remove the "merged" items from the cart upon login. Instructions for that are scattered all over the forum. And of course you'll need to remake your changes after upgrading.

I think you misunderstood. It's not that I don't want them to be able to return and continue shopping, it's that the items left in the cart don't show up in the cart until after they go through logging into PayPal and choosing their payment method through PayPal (PayPal balance, or credit card) and only then does it return to the website and inform them of the other items that were previously in the cart. Than after all that they have to log into their PayPal account yet again, and again choose their method of payment through PayPal.

Right. And if you were to turn off the EC Shortcut Button then the customers would login to your store FIRST, before going through PayPal as you described. Then there would not be the problem you stated.

It's a radio button in the payment module's management screen: ADMIN >>> MODULES >>> PAYMENT >>> PayPal Express Checkout
