Adding Variations To a Product

Is it possible to add variations to a product rather than product 5 completely new listings for each additional size?

I am using version 1.5, if this makes any difference

Our products use color and size almost exclusively. We have a drop down for color and another for size. Don't understand "completely new listings for each additional size".
