I'm receiving this error:
Your database appears to need patching to a higher level. See Admin->Tools->Server Information to review patch levels.

However, I did not perform any upgrades to my database, php, etc. I've just been coding, modifying template code.

Does this mean that my only choice is to upgrade my DB? Is there any other work around?

Looks like you need to go back over what you modified. One of the files might have addressed the database version.
A common mistake is

I've just been coding, modifying template code.

Take the time to learn Zen Cart and you'll find there's little need for "coding."

I'm sorry but I can't seem to isolate the problem. I haven't found a file addressing DB versions.

It seems that the error message is only showing on ajax calls. Are there any other possibilities for what might be causing this?
I do see the error message on the admin side as well.
